A Sense of Place

Project: Maintenance, Residential
Location: Golden, CO
This landscape is the product of a genuine connection between the client, the designer and the site. As the relationship grew, so too did the overall scope and vision of the project. What started as a simple enhancement ultimately culminated in a full-site renovation complete with relaxing spaces, beautiful surrounds and an outdoor kitchen suitable for a celebrity chef.

The challenge in designing it was finding a way to create a sense of place in the middle of a residential development. Unifying two separate lots totaling just over 1.3 acres added to the complexity. The overall focus was to transform a traditional suburban setting into a botanical garden and private escape.

Those who visit the space can appreciate the vibrant colors from a variety of flowers used. These contrast nicely with the warm tones brought out by the use of local stones and boulders which were quarried by the nearby foothills. Lush perennials, flowering shrubs and swaying grasses make up layers of soft textures which balance the ore structured character of the buildings and hardscape. After relocating over three dozen mature trees, along with the introduction of many others, we created a perimeter backdrop that acts as a buffer from neighboring homes and creates a barrier of privacy.

Although an expansive lawn was desired, its prevailing sense of openness was brought into scale through careful attention to plant layer. Thoughtful consideration was also given to the location, spatial organization and workflow of the luxury outdoor kitchen complete with high-end appliances and refrigeration. The alignment and positioning of this entertaining space allows for unobstructed views of the overall landscape creating the "best seats in the house".

From design through construction, the attention to detail and execution were paramount. Through professional care and maintenance of this property, the landscape remains in peak condition and the original relationship continues to grow.
