Earth day is only once a year, but these tips are timeless. It is important that we take steps now to reduce our carbon footprint because our environment is the most important resource for life. Here are a few tips to make your homes outdoor living space more eco-friendly.

1. Water your lawn in the early morning

You may not be an early riser, but the early morning is the best time to water a lawn. Watering in the cool morning hours between 5:00 am and 10:00 am decreases the chances of water evaporation and water drift from the afternoon heat and wind. Also, split your watering time into short sessions with 15 minute breaks in-between to allow the water to soak in.

2. Use native plantings

As plants that have already adapted to their natural environments soil and climate, native plantings are easy to grow, low-maintenance and create eye-catching displays. Wildlife also benefits from native plantings as they provide shelter and food in the form of native nuts, seeds and fruits.

3. Replace your outdoor lighting systems incandescent light bulbs with LED’s

LED lights conserve energy and have a longer lifespan than incandescent bulbs. In the end, this will save you more money in energy costs and trips to the store while increasing the long-term value of your home and extending your outdoor living time.
