There are many materials available in most of our own landscapes that you can use to decorate for the holiday season. By now, your flower pots that had nice summer flowers in them are empty and waiting to be filled. Why not take the opportunity to add to your holiday decorations?
These cuttings or plants can be used as layering pots or in accents to your decor (Phil will display and example of holiday decorating with plants and branch cuttings):
- Red Twig Dogwoods – their red branches make for excellent center pieces for height and dramatic natural color
- Evergreens – Junipers, Arborvitae, Spruce and Pine branches provide excellent green foliate
- Mahonia Repens – Evergreen, holly-like texture and appearance
- Ornamental Grasses – Still have asthetic appeal right now
- Hawthorns – Have great branching
- Holly – A traditional piece to include

‘Tis the season to give and receive blooming plants during the holidays. If you receive a blooming plant asa a gift, relax and enjoy it’s beauty. There are 6 common plants given durning the holidays and they are all basically fail proof. Examples of these are and Phil will have a few of them for display:
- Poinsettia – Place the plants in bright, indirect light, keep in a cooler room, and water when dry (about 1-2x/wk). Keep out of cold drafts and direct heat. Don’t let it sit in water.
- Christmas Cactus – Place the plants in bright, indirect light, keep in a cooler room, and water when dry (about 1-2x/wk). If you notice the leaves turning wrinkled, you need to either put it in a cooler location or give it more water.
- Norfolk Island Pine – Place the plants in bright, indirect light, keep in a cooler room, and water when dry (about 1-2x/wk). Don’t let it sit in water. They love to be misted with a spray bottle.
- Kalanchoe – Plance the plants in the sun druingn the winter (move to a less intense are in the summer months). This plant prefers to be slightly damp.
- Amaryllis & Paperwhites – Place the plants in bright, indirect light, keep in a cooler room, and water when dry (about 1-2x/wk).
- Christmas Pepper – Place the plants in sunshine and water when dry (about 1-2x/wk).
