Providing seasonal annual color in Colorado can be a challenge with our fluctuating temperatures and unpredictable weather. With careful selection of spring and summer flowering annuals, great color combinations can be created. In this Cherry Hills residence, last year’s fall bulb plantings resulted in a breathtaking display of early spring color. Using a multitude of colored tulips incorporated with giant alliums, this was a perfect bridge to carry us into our warm season color. As the season began to warm up and the tulips died down, the alliums were left standing. Hoping to create a soft entry design and pairing with the purple Globemaster, deep blue salvias, lavender verbenas, bright orange zinnias and splashes of white daisies facilitate a smooth continuance into the summer season.

Flanking the entry bed are two columns that we used tall purple fountain grasses to give a flowing movement with bright orange osteospermum and trailing purple verbena. Extending the possibilities that annual container gardens have, the stucco cabana area around the pool is the ideal place to create an Italian container garden.

The use of flowering pink oleanders paired with the deep magentas of bougainvillea construct the perfect picture of a Tuscan garden. We paired the tropical centers with cascading blue scaevola and chartreuse sweet potato vines. With the high humidity and heavy rainfalls, all the tropical plant foliage flourished this season and we were able to get repeat blooms on not only the oleander but the bougainvillea trees with the use of a balanced slow release fertilizer and proper maintenance practices.

Overlooking the pool on a covered balcony, over-sized pots were filled more shade loving tropical palms and white bird-of-paradise in combination with bright pinks and lavender impatiens. The hardy impatiens are a great choice to pair with the tropical plants for the low maintenance and prolific blooms that are produced all season long.
The success of this landscape is key to the annual design and maintenance that we provided. The pool and balcony areas are large terraces that can be sterile and non-descript. A combination of mixed pot sizes along with the color, height, texture of plant selection are instrumental in softening and defining this highly used outdoor living space.
