Heavy Duty Mechanic

The Opportunity

As a Heavy Duty Mechanic you will lead a team of mechanics to maintain and repair light and heavy duty company equipment in the shop and field environments. You will also perform major and minor mechanical repairs to ensure proper performance and overall safety of vehicles.

Responsibilities

Mechanic Responsibilities 
  • Perform preventative maintenance and repair of a variety of equipment such as wheel loaders, backhoes, excavators, trenchers, motor graders, pick-up trucks, tandem dump trucks, tractor-trailer combinations, flatbed and dump trailers, along with small landscape maintenance equipment, light and heavy duty snow removal equipment.
  • Inspect and diagnose equipment to determine the necessary repairs to correct the problems. Disassembling of machines, trucks or trailers, repairing or replacing broken parts.
  • Disassemble equipment and/or components, then correct the problem through repairing or replacing the necessary parts.
  • Perform field service repair as needed which includes diagnostics, maintenance and repairs.
  • Fabricate to repair which can include Arc and MIG welding, along with torch and plasma cutting. 
  • Keep a clean and organized work area.
Foreman Administrative Responsibilities
  • Complete equipment service order paperwork.
  • Communicate daily with Shop Manager on workload and needs.
  • Parts ordering process with Shop Manager.
  • Use of the red tag / green tag system.
  • Follow all safety rules and regulations.
Winter Responsibilities
  • During winter months when landscaping projects are no longer scheduled, will be on-call for snow related equipment repairs.
  • Diagnose and repair snow equipment for necessary repairs both in the shop and field environments.
  • Perform annual inspections, evaluations and repairs.

Qualifications

Education and Experience 
  • High School Diploma / GED
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience working on a variety of light and heavy duty equipment that includes gas and diesel engines.
  • Ability to pass required safety training, DOT physical exam, background check and drug testing.
  • Must have valid Colorado Driver's License and clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Specialized Knowledges, Skills and Abilities 
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to give direction, adapt to change, establish relationships, build consensus, anticipate roadblocks and work in a team environment.
  • Thorough knowledge of CDOT and OSHA regulations.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple duties, projects and work assignments.
  • Thorough knowledge of equipment.
  • Excellent mechanical skills and strong mechanical aptitude. 
  • Ability to read schematics, both hydraulic and electrical.
  • Thorough knowledge of the limitations of specific types of construction equipment and safety practices used in performing maintenance services.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) are highly desired.
  • Class A CDL.
  • ASE certification desired.

Type of travel: Driving equipment and company vehicles for repairs and service. Pick up parts.
Percent of travel: 10%

Moderately undesirable working conditions (i.e. occasional exposure to significant levels of temperature, air pollution, noise pollution, chemical gases and substances; physical trauma conditions of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns). The work schedule varies depending on the weather, during busy season start time is 6:30am. The position may require work on Saturday's or late night in case of an emergency. The crew should be flexible with availability depending on the needs of the shop.
